The third diocese, the Eparchy of Bathery came into being on 28 October 1978, and Most Rev. Cyril Mar Baselios took charge as its first Bishop on 2 February 1979. After 17-years of inspiring leadership in the diocese, His Excellency left for Thiruvananthapuram and was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Trivandrum. From 14 December 1995 to 5 December 1997, the diocese was led by Msgr. Thomas Thannickakuzhy as its Administrator. Later Most Rev. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios was enthroned as the head of eparchy on 5 February 1997.
